Summary
There were 53 submissions on the “Public Health Advisory Committee Discussion Paper: Emerging Issues for Public Health in New Zealand” after the discussion document was distributed to public health, District Health Board, local government, primary healthcare organisations, non-government organisations, Māori health providers and others.
The submissions generally agreed that the document had captured the key issues and opportunities facing public health action in New Zealand. Comments were also made around the need for a long-term vision for public health and the need for New Zealand to consider global issues.
Submissions dealt with four aspects: structural issues, contracts and funding, workforce issues and leadership issues.
Many submissions also offered comments on wider public health issues (such as refugee and migrant needs). Comments also voiced the need for long-term public health planning, the effects of globalisation, and the need for New Zealand to contribute to international issues, particularly in the wider Pacific region.
