Economic development and health policy

Date of publication: February 2004

Summary
This paper focuses on what current and developing strategic frameworks were being used to steer economic development at the time, and how might those frameworks be shaped to include important health impacts. Accordingly, an assessment is made of the key areas of debate at the time in New Zealand in relation to economic development and health, and the magnitude of health impacts.

Second, this paper provides an outline analysis of where the main economic development frameworks being used at the time within government may have significant health outcome implications, and where they might therefore be better linked to health gains.

The paper was used to inform the final advice to the New Zealand Minister of Health about the economic influences on the health of New Zealanders.
