Review on International Evidence Linking Health and the Urban Built Environment

Date of publication (online): April 2008

Summary

This review will discuss the international evidence in relation to the health effects of the urban environment. The vast bulk of research evidence to date has been collected in the United States where the emergence of the ‘New Urbanism’ movement has led to a proliferation of research centres exploring the impact of urban design on health.

Several excellent reviews of the impact of the urban environment on health have been published which have assisted this short summary. In addition there is now a growing body of research evidence emerging in Australia and New Zealand looking at the impact of urban sprawl in these countries. In particular some recent work exploring the impact of urban design on physical activity in Auckland is a valuable addition to the international evidence base.
