Intersections between Transport and Health: the Impacts of Transport on Health

Date of publication: April 2003

Summary
This paper provides a summary of the known health impacts of transport, including impacts on health inequalities. It has drawn heavily on two landmark publications – a report on road transport and health by the British Medical Association and a World Health Organization report on transport, environment and health. As these publications have already documented the available research, this paper summarises their findings and draws on other references as additional material. The impacts covered are physical activity, road traffic safety, air quality, noise levels, social support, and climate change. It focuses on the impacts of land transport, rather than transport by sea or air.
